I lost my job yesterday.
So I guess that means I'm no longer Retro Reporter, but meh. Semantics.
For those of you who don't know, I was the digital reporter with Metro Edmonton, responsible for updating the website and adding digital elements to the stories. I was laid off (along with approximately a dozen others across the country) probably as part of growing pains. Metro Edmonton's newsroom had doubled in size since last March, and I think my position/my work was seen as unnecessary. So I got the axe.
BUT I am happy. At first I wasn't, but I've had some time to reflect. I no longer enjoy the journalist part of my job and was considering looking for something new anyway. This was just a big kick in the ass to do it. I've just applied for EI (that was fun) and have already found a posting for my dream job (that I am actually qualified for!).
So I suppose it's onwards and upwards from here. I still have a lot of stuff to get together (and unpack the crap from my office) and paperwork to file, but in the meantime I plan on hunting for jobs and doing some other things I enjoy - like knitting and sewing. Perhaps I can get a few projects done in this forced sabbatical!
Last night I went out with Ian and Erin to A Tribute to the Great Swing Bands of the '30s & '40s, a jazz concert put on by the bands from the University of Alberta and Grant MacEwan University. I had bought the tickets before I lost my job, but it was a great excuse to dress up and listen to my favourite music.
This dress was actually a gift from Bailey on the weekend. We were at a local vintage shop (think more 70s-90s vintage, not 40s and 50s) when she spied this dress. It was clearly old and handmade, and had been marked down from $60 to $15.
It was also filthy. I soaked it twice and probably could have done a third. What is with vintage shops that don't clean their wares before selling?
It was actually much more brown than that, my camera filtered some of it out. Barf.
I bought some others things, including a "diner" dress from the vintage store and a playsuit, a beaded and embroidered cardigan and shoes from Rowena at their basement sale.
Well, that was a very all-encompassing blog post. Here's hoping your Monday was better than mine!
XO Laurie

Keep in mind that it is a GOOD thing when somewhere is trying to pawn off a filthy item for $60 ;) It means that if you're patient, chances are no one will buy it and then you get to snag it for $15! AND enjoy the process of getting the ick out...that is personally one of my fave parts, haha. You feel accomplished after! Excellent find :D
I'm really sorry this happened to you, dear Laurie - that's one of those curve balls that is always a major game changer. I really commend your optimistic attitude in the wake of such a big, sudden change and hope that your next job will even better for you.

I glad that you're already seeing the positives in what is often viewed as a negative situation. The same thing happened to my boyfriend last year and he felt the same as you afterwards. It can sometimes wake you up from out of a rut and now he has a job which he LOVES. I'm sure it won't be long before the same can be said about you. Chin up little lady!
Also beautiful dress!

I'm sorry to hear about your job loss. Here's hoping you go onwards to bigger and better things!
